Hardship Fund

All JHU PhD-level graduate workers experiencing financial hardships are eligible to receive funds from the TRU-UE Local 197 Hardship Fund. Applications are accepted and reviewed year-round on a rolling basis. Multiple requests or fund extension requests will be accommodated based on availability of funds. Before applying to this fund, workers should first apply to any JHU-run hardship funds available to them. These JHU-run funds are listed below.


JHU-Run Hardship Funds

Homewood Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs Emergency Fund

Who’s Eligible

Currently enrolled graduate students and full-time postdoctoral fellows in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (full-time status only) and Whiting School of Engineering (excluding EP and AAP students)

Fund Details
  • Annual fund allocation between $5,000 – $9,000
  • Typical award sizes between $500 – $1,000 
  • For “immediate, essential expenses because of a temporary hardship resulting from an unexpected emergency situation, typically out of the control of the student/postdoctoral fellow”
  • Not a loan and does not need to be repaid
  • May count asnd income and subject to taxes
  • May affect a student’s financial aid status

Whiting Engineering Student Support & Advocacy Emergency Fund

Who’s Eligible

Homewood Graduate Students, Homewood Postdoctoral Fellows, and Engineering for Professional Graduate Students who can “demonstrate extraordinary financial hardship resulting from ​​an emergency, accident, or other severe unplanned event.”

Fund Details
  • Annual fund allocation between $5,000 – $9,000
  • Typical award sizes between $500 – $1,000
  • Not a loan and does not need to be repaid
  • May count and income and subject to taxes
  • Items not typically covered: Tuition and fees, legal fines/expenses, parking tickets/fines, health insurance, alcohol, animal needs, gift cards

School of Nursing Joanne Conway Student Support Fund

Who’s Eligible
  • Be currently enrolled as a  degree or certificate-seeking student at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing.
  • Have considered and/or exhausted all other sources of financial aid.
Fund Details
  • Covers unforeseen expenses, including but are not limited to “rent, food, essential utilities, childcare, medical bills, medical equipment,  essential personal belongings that were lost as result of a natural disaster, fire, flood, or theft, and travel expenses to return home in event of a sudden family death or emergency.”

Bloomberg SPH Student Emergency Fund

Who’s Eligible
  • Please contact your department or program to check whether specific departmental or program-specific funds are available. 
Fund Details
  • Annual fund allocation at the departmental level may vary pretty substantially.
  • Full-time students and those who are on approved paid or unpaid leave may also request emergency funding at a school-wide level through the Office of Student Life.
    • This can be done by requesting an emergency grant application from Shekeitha Jefferies (sjeffri4@jhu.edu) and copying your academic coordinator or advisor. 
    • Documentation for expenses you would like the funds to cover, and how this request is based on emergency needs that support you enrolling must be presented. 
    • The stated maximum grant is $650, with a typical response time between 5-10 business days once all documentation is provided. 
  • Expenses not eligible for funding include tuition and fees, study abroad costs, non-essential utilities, parking tickets, non-emergency travel, etc.
  • Priority will be given to students whose tenure at JHSPH may be at risk because of unexpected expenses.

  • For full consideration attach copies of all supporting documentation, e.g., copies of bills, receipts, legal notices, etc. 

School of Education Student Emergency Fund

Who’s Eligible
  • Be currently enrolled as a part-time (at least 5 or more credit hours) or full-time student at the School of Education
  • Be currently in good academic standing and not have any disciplinary actions that resulted from violating the University Student Conduct Code or SOE Academic Misconduct policy
  • Have considered or exhausted all other sources of financial aid.
Fund Details
  • Provides “a small amount of short-term financial assistance, not serve as ongoing relief for recurring expenses”
  • Does not cover tuition or student account balances

School of Medicine Graduate Student Emergency Fund

Who’s Eligible

All students who are currently enrolled full-time in any School of Medicine graduate biomedical education program

Fund Details
  • Annual fund allocation between $19,000 – $30,000
  • Typical award sizes between $150 – $1,500, averaging $550 
  • Cover one-time expenses for students with temporary financial emergency, e.g., medical expenses
  • Does not cover tuition
  • Funding is limited and awards are need-based
