Join Our Standing Committees!

Organizing Committee

Organizing Committee focuses on expanding and strengthening our union’s presence and membership. We develop and execute strategies for recruitment, training, and engagement of new organizers, while supporting existing working groups in their efforts. We coordinate collective actions, including issue-based campaigns, and actions during collective bargaining processes. Organizing committee works with other committees to ensure our organizing efforts are aligned with the overall goals of the union. If you’re passionate about grassroots organizing, mobilizing members, and fighting for workers’ rights, join us!

The Grievance Committee oversees all the ongoing grievances that are happening within the unit and identifies recurring issues across divisions in order to coordinate class-action grievances and organizing campaigns. We welcome all stewards to attend grievance committee if they need help strategizing active or potential grievances or if they need help identifying if a contract violation has occurred. We welcome all members to contact stewards in their department/program or email us at truue.grievances@gmail.com if they are experiencing any workplace issues or have any questions.

The Media and Communications Committee manages the Union’s communications, internal and external! We write and send mass emails, create flyers and social media graphics, and talk to the press about Union activities.

All of our communication material is done via template and edited as a committee! No one-on-one interactions or individual/solo work needed. If you did this sort of thing in a club in undergrad or high school, it is the exact same thing! In terms of roles we need filled, we need the following, in order from most to least urgent:

  • A person to make flyers based on requests from groups of members
  • A person to edit/revise flyers groups of members make themselves
  • A person to edit/revise emails groups of members make themselves
  • Two people to interface with other committees and stewards to obtain information for a bimonthly newsletter
  • Two people to compile content for a bimonthly newsletter
  • Two people to serve as back-up media representatives

Some of these roles could be combined if you’re interested. Committee members would be expected to attend our weekly committee meeting and check the slack at least once a day to stay up-to-date about comms requests. Please let Julia Choe (jchoe24@jhu.edu) and Ryann Hubbart (rhubba10@jhu.edu) know if you can help out!

We help manage TRU-UE’s finances. In particular, we:

  • Propose TRU-UE’s annual budget and coordinate budget amendments.
  • Balance expense ledgers across TRU-UE’s financial accounts.
  • Assess and disperse fund requests from TRU-UE’s members.
  • Pay per-capita dues to TRU-UE’s parent organization.

If you are interested in helping us, please email us at finance@trujhu.org.

DMRC maintains TRU-UE’s data resources. We run secure elections, organize documents, and manage digital storage. We work closely with Finance Committee on ensuring proper dues payments. We are looking for help from number crunchers, spreadsheet whizzes, and file system masters. If you are interested, please email dmrc@trujhu.org.

SPAC coordinates events to foster political engagement with issues both on and off JHU’s campus, including showing solidarity with Baltimore community organizations and other local unions. Events include film screenings, teach-ins, faculty-student panels, flyering/tabling, and attending strikes and pickets for other locals. If you’re looking to spread the word on important issues, get your classmates activated, or show JHU that Baltimore is a union town, SPAC is the place for you. Email the co-coordinators to get involved: Emily Sanchez (esanch35@jh.edu) or Erin Hallenbeck (ehallen3@jh.edu).
